An adventure may be worn as a muddy spot....

Picture
or it may be worn as a proud insignia. It is the woman wearing it who makes it the one thing or the other.

Information

STUFF SACKS -  Every Pioneer needs a stuff sack (parents find these invaluable at the fort also).  Be creative with your stuff sack.  We have included several links, but don't be limited to our ideas.  Just make sure that whatever you end  up with has comfortable shoulder straps and fits in the "period" look.  What will you need to place in your stuff sacks?  Plate (tin pie pan works well),  knife, fork, spoon, tin cup (tin can will work), small towel, water bottle ( plastic bottle covered with masking tape or brown duct tape), hankie or tissue, pencil and snacks (wrapped with string in a paper bag).

OTHER ITEMS YOU MAY WANT TO BRING TO THE FORT  -  Be sure to bring your cameras!  You may also want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, reading glasses, allergy meds in case of wind, a clear plastic poncho and change of clothes  (if rain is predicted), nice warm jacket!

NAME TAGS - Every Pioneer (Parents and Siblings included) will need a name tag with your SUTTER'S FORT CHARACTER name on it.  These name tags need to be "period" looking (only natural materials and period colors).  We have attached a couple of sample pictures at the bottom of the page.  THESE ARE MANDATORY PER THE STATE FORT STAFF!  These name tags will have to be worn as long as the public is in the fort, so make them comfortable and of a safe length.
REMEMBER!  YOU CANNOT PARTICIPATE WITHOUT YOUR NAME TAG!

JOURNALS - Keeping a journal of your Fort Experience is a great way to expand the learning experience and keep the memories for years to come.  We encourage each student pioneer to make a journal to bring to the Fort with them.  The below links have some easy DIY instructions.  We have also found several "moleskin" type journals that are cheap and would fit the bill.  Many of the Characters leading the various stations will ask the student Pioneers to journal their experience.  Some of the younger pioneers also enjoy collecting autographs!

PHOTO OF FAMILY IN PERIOD CLOTHING -  for our Welcome Board at fort.  The final due date for this is  Friday, January 12th.  You can send your pictures to:  lisamvfox@itsafw.com.  You will need to be in period costume and, please, don't stand in front of the family car!  A fence, bush, tree or wall is the preferred background.

Resources

Below is a list of resource documents that your family may find helpful in preparing for your fort experience.  Please feel free to use this information or do your own researching.  The preparation is a large piece of your Sutter's Fort Adventure.  REMEMBER!  We want authenticity (No Tennis Shoes or Blue Jeans ALLOWED), but balance that with having fun.  NO ONE IS JUDGING YOUR PERIOD DRESS!  Let go of that pressure and just have fun doing the best you can do.  Some families will look incredible and some families will truly look "homespun".  Pick the one that provides the least stress and the most fun for your unique family.  Learn a little, Laugh a LOT!!
